Social Skills Group at Barb’s Place focuses on teaching and supporting our students to understand and succeed within his or her social world. These sessions focus on being flexible with our thoughts, responding to others, understanding the qualities it takes to be both a good friend and a good sibling, as well as learning about sportsmanship in a social setting. Throughout sessions, we will discuss the underlying principles of a size of a problem, recognizing your own emotions and reading verbal and non-verbal social cues. All programs are guided by trained behaviour interventionists and the principles of each session reflect such.
Following the Think Social Curriculum, Incredible Flexible You, Social Detective and Superflex Programs. During their time at Barb’s Place, our students will get the opportunity to learn through cooperative play and games, participate in many fine and gross motor activities, create art, role play scenarios, discuss social videos, share snack together, visit the animals as well as enjoy child lead time with one another both indoors and outdoors. We believe eating together, preparing food and sharing conversation around the table is a great way to get to know one another and sustain friendships. Individual goals can be incorporated and we are always excited to learn and grow with your child.
We are always encouraging our students to apply the skills we are learning to our local environments. We will visit restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, the board game café, skating rink, Locolanding and so much more. We like to have bonfires and go tobogganing in the winter and go to the beach and park in the summer.
